Jim Corbett National Park — Where India's Wildlife Legacy Began
Jim Corbett National Park is India's oldest national park and Asia's first, established in 1936 as Hailey National Park. Located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, it forms the core of the Corbett Tiger Reserve spanning over 1,288 sq km. Named after the legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Edward James Corbett.
The park was the first area in India to come under Project Tiger in 1973. Its diverse landscape includes dense sal forests, riverine belts, marshy depressions, grasslands, and a large lake formed by the Ramganga river. Home to over 200 Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, leopards, and more than 600 bird species.
Six safari zones — Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Durga Devi, and Sitabani — each with distinct terrain and wildlife experiences. Dhikala's vast chaur grasslands along the Ramganga is considered one of the finest wildlife viewing areas in all of Asia.
Try the morning safari in Bijrani if it's your first visit — the light filtering through sal trees is magical and tigers are most active near the waterholes. I've guided here for 14 years and every drive still surprises me.

Jim Corbett Jungle Safari
A gypsy or canter safari is how you truly meet Corbett. Run by the Uttarakhand Forest Department, each drive takes you deep into the park with a trained guide and driver — close enough to feel the forest breathe.
The park's 520 sq km core is split into 6 zones, and every one tells a different story. Dhikala's vast grasslands, Bijrani's waterholes, Durga Devi's riverine trails — no two drives are ever the same.
A Day on Safari
A soft knock, a flask of chai. The sal forest is still blue-grey and misty as you set off toward Amdanda gate.
Permits checked, engine humming. Alarm calls of chital echo somewhere ahead — the forest is already talking.
Fresh pugmarks on the sandy track. Your guide cuts the engine. Elephants graze in Dhikala grasslands. Everyone holds their breath.
Cameras full, hearts fuller. Warm parathas and stories swapped over chai at the forest rest house before the afternoon drive.
