About the Reserve

Pench National Park — Where Mowgli Roamed

Pench National Park is the land that inspired Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, located across Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh and extending into Maharashtra. Established as a National Park in 1975 and declared a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger in 1992, it spans 758 sq km.

Tigers are frequently spotted along the Pench River corridor where teak forests give way to open meadows. Home to the legendary Collarwali tigress and her lineage, plus leopards, dholes (wild dogs), gaur, and over 300 bird species.

The landscape includes dense teak canopy, dry deciduous mixed forests, open grasslands, and riverine corridors — the very terrain Kipling described in his timeless tales of Mowgli, Shere Khan, and Bagheera.

Safari expert

Start with a morning drive in Turia Zone if it's your first visit — the light along the Pench River is extraordinary and dholes are frequently seen hunting at dawn. I've guided here for 14 years and this forest never disappoints.

The Experience

Pench Jungle Safari

A gypsy safari is how you truly meet Pench. Run by the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department, each drive takes you deep into the teak forest with a trained naturalist and driver — close enough to hear the forest whisper the way Kipling described.

The park's 758 sq km is split into 6 zones across the MP and Maharashtra sides, and every one tells a different story. Some follow the river where tigers drink at first light, others open to dry meadows where dholes hunt in coordinated packs. No two drives are ever the same.

From Our Field Notes

A Day on Safari

1
05:30
Wake to the teak forest

A soft knock, a flask of chai. The jungle is wrapped in blue-grey mist as you set off toward Turia Gate.

2
06:00
Into the gates

Permits checked, engine humming. Langur alarm calls cascade from the treetops — the ancient warning system even Mowgli would have known.

3
07:15
The pause

Fresh pugmarks on the track. Your naturalist reads the forest like a book — flattened grass, a sambar frozen mid-stride. Everyone holds their breath.

4
09:30
Back for breakfast

Cameras full, hearts fuller. Warm parathas and stories swapped over chai. The afternoon drive brings different light, different movement.

We spotted a tigress with two cubs near the Pench River on our morning drive in Turia Zone. The permit arrived on time and our naturalist was incredibly knowledgeable about the Jungle Book history.

Travelled with our kids aged 6 and 9. The buffer zone was perfect for our family — less bumpy and lots of gaur sightings. Guide was patient and wonderful with children.
