About the Park

The Real Jungle Book &
Mowgli's Forest

Pench National Park is one of India's most famous tiger reserves located across both Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The reserve gets its name from the Pench River that flows through the forest landscape, creating a dramatic mix of teak forests, grasslands, rocky slopes, and water bodies.

Pench Tiger Reserve is internationally famous for inspiring Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. The forests, wildlife, and landscapes of Pench are believed to have inspired the jungle setting and characters from the story. Today it is popularly known as Pench (Mowgli) Tiger Reserve.

Pench was first declared a sanctuary in 1965, became a National Park in 1983, and a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger in 1992. Today it is one of Central India's most loved tiger safari destinations.
