About the Reserve

Maharashtra's Oldest &
Most Famous Tiger Reserve

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) is Maharashtra's oldest and most famous tiger reserve located in Chandrapur district. Known for outstanding Bengal tiger sightings and rich biodiversity, Tadoba National Park attracts thousands of wildlife lovers every year.

The word "Tadoba" comes from the tribal god "Taru" or "Tadoba," worshipped by local tribal communities. According to local legends, Taru was a village chief killed by a tiger and later worshipped as a deity. A shrine dedicated to Tadoba still exists near Tadoba Lake.

Hunting was banned in 1935, it was declared a National Park in 1955, and the Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1986. In 1995 they were combined to form the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve — one of Central India's finest wildlife destinations.
